Installing The Processor

Installing the Processor:
The processor is one of the most expensive components of your PC. It is absolutely imperative that you follow anti-static precautions and do not force the processor into place. Modern processors are designed to simply fall into place when the pins are aligned with the holes on the motherboard. Unwrap your processor and match the pins to the holes and gently place the processor in position. If you positioned it correctly the processor should fall right into place. Pull down the silver lever next to the processor to lock it into place.

Here is a great video explain the procedure:

Installing the processor cooler:
The cooler is positioned over the processor and usually held in place by metal clips. Make sure you peal off any plastic that is covering the thermal compound that is put on the cooler by the processor manufacturer. This compound ensures there is no gap between the processor and cooler and allows maximum heat transfer to keep the processor nice and cool.

Use a slotted screwdriver to gently, but firmly, hook the retaining clips under the tabs on the processor socket. Be very careful not to let the screwdriver slip. If it scratches the surface of the motherboard, the motherboard could be ruined.

Some processor coolers use plastic retaining clips and do not require tools.

Don’t forget to plug in the fan! In most cases, it will plug into a three-pin connector on the motherboard that is labeled “CPU Fan.” This is to allow the computer to control the fan speed based upon how hard the processor is working.
